The Cuffie River Nature Retreat - Tobago's leading bird watching and nature resort
Tobago, the gentle and tranquil half of the nation state of Trinidad and Tobago, the most southerly islands of the Caribbean island chain, exudes a lush, relaxed gracefulness throughout its entire 16-mile length and 7-mile width. Tobago, for several years voted the world's leading Eco-tourism Destination, gently charms her callers, with the finest opportunities for eco-tourism: a pristine rain forest - the oldest protected in the western hemisphere: ... exotic birding ... mountainous grandeur ...unexpected waterfalls ...beautiful exotic birds ...protected marine parks harbouring fascinating worlds of underwater coral ...white sand beaches ... warm-hearted and generous people and the Cuffie River Nature Retreat - a rainforest retreat, mere steps away from the finest rainforest birding adventure tours.
On the edge of Tobago's rainforest, surrounded by wild heliconias, bamboo groves and ancient forest trees and cradled in the remote and idyllic Runnemede valley lies our eco-lodge, the Cuffie River Nature Retreat - a secluded rainforest resort offering the ultimate in tropical rainforest birding and rainforest adventure tours. The resort is a remote yet modern, upmarket facility set against a backdrop of mountains and encircled by cool, refreshing mountain streams and pools. This is nature tourism at its most subtle yet refined - allowing you a complete rainforest experience while enjoying the creature comforts of home.
The concept of this eco-tourism resort was born out of the rural development experience of owner/manager, Regina Dumas. Her work in this field led her throughout the Caribbean where issues affecting rural people and their livelihoods were all too evident. For Regina, the human, environmental and infrastructural factors were found to be the most significant to the well-being of the rural sector and thus played a central role in the envisioning and development of this project. The result? A beautiful blending of attractive architecture set in the midst of idyllic rainforest and with warm and welcoming hospitality awaiting every guest who enters the eco-lodge.
Cuffie River Nature Retreat, a romantic and secluded tropical rainforest and exotic birding resort located at the edge of Tobago's main ridge - the oldest protected tropical rainforest in the western hemisphere.

Our swimming pool utilises environmentally-friendly purification, using salt instead of chlorine. The elevated location offers stunning views over the surrounding landscape. A ramp provides access to physically challenged guests. An ideal place to cool off with a freshly mixed rum punch or fruit drink after a walk in the rainforest.
Our menus are crafted from local raw materials and cooking expertise and creativity second to none. Breakfast comprise fresh juices, fresh fruit and cereal plus your own menu selection. Dinner menus are "table d’hôte" and reflect the unique, multi-ethnic nature of Trinidad and Tobago. Delicious light lunches are also available.
"Our stay at Cuffie River was AWESOME! First, the location is beautiful, quiet, totally surrounded by birds, hummingbirds, beautiful flowers and vegetation. The rooms are very comfortable with rocking chairs on the patio. Every corner of the resort is designed to enjoy nature: including the small library, patio, pool and ping-pong area. The food was exceptional. Being vegetarian, we were happily surprised with the variety and quality of the dishes served. The tours and guides arranged by Regina were high quality. We thoroughly enjoyed this portion of our stay in Tobago and would eagerly suggest this lodge to anyone visiting Tobago and wanting to enjoy nature."Cindy Uphoff, U.S.A.
"Happy to find this place. Well into the wilderness, but a very nice place indeed to stay for a couple of days. We were superbly taken care of with lovely breakfasts and dinners with food from own and local supplies. Climate splendid and for a birder like me. Wonderful to wake up with all the bird calls and not least to be surrounded by hummingbirds, even flying through our room. Great place in order to experience a different Tobago away from the busy South-east."Matts and Maertha Ekman, Sweden
"We had the pleasure of staying 7 nights at the Cuffie River Retreat and we absolutely adored it. The resort rests on the edge of the rain forest and Regina and her husband run this place with a family-like hospitality and great personality. You feel like coming home to relatives you haven´t seen for a long time!"Thomas, Norway
"Regina and Earl, the best hosts we have ever encountered. A stunningly beautiful paradise within paradise. Our stay could of only been bettered by staying longer! Food 100%; Surroundings 100%; Staff 100%; Peace & Tranquility 100%, Cuffie River Nature Retreat & Tobago 100%. We really can not fault."Royston & Sharon Smith, England
"What's extraordinary about Cuffie River is how different it is from the tourist world - not only because of its immersion in nature, its amazing diversity of bird and plant life, and its beautifully prepared local food, but also because of the loving care that Regina provides. We stayed for 7 happy days, during which time we helped at least a dozen confused hummingbirds out of our room. We got quite good at it, and the hummingbirds seemed appreciative."Dean Crawford, U.S.A.
"I have been using Cuffie River exclusively for my birdwatching groups. The designer/builder/owner/manager Regina is the perfect hostess, leaving nothing to chance and making everyone feel at home. We 'birders' are a finicky clan at times, requiring pre-dawn departures with packed lunches and late returns and dinners. Regina does not flinch but handles such itineraries with alacrity and professionalism. Among the many perks of staying at Cuffie are 1) a truly expert resident naturalist, Desmond Wright; 2) many of the Main Ridge birds, even the rare White-tailed Sabrewing hummingbird, can be found without leaving the immediate vicinity; and 3) no worries about security because of the remote location - it is the only place on earth where I leave my door wide open at night, letting the pleasant breeze cool me. Participants often email me after T&T trips that Cuffie was their favorite place on either island."Bill Murphy, U.S.A.
